Why this is the default northern day

If someone staying in Merimbula or Pambula says they are “doing Beowa,” they usually mean this half: Haycock Road off the Princes Highway, The Pinnacles loop, maybe a picnic at Haycock Point. Official visitor info treats Pambula-Haycock as its own precinct — different road, different fee, different day shape from Green Cape.

Use it when you want colour, a short walk and a beach without Light to Light logistics or the $8 southern vehicle day. Nail one hero (The Pinnacles, or Haycock–Barmouth) and leave Green Cape for another morning. Trying both sections the same day is a highway day with two tired lookouts.

This is Yuin Country (Thaua, Dyirringan, Bidwell). There are more than 50 recorded Aboriginal sites in the wider park, including middens along the Pambula River. Stick to the track. Do not disturb cultural sites. This guide does not speak for Traditional Owners.

The Pinnacles — the northern postcard

Official Pinnacles loop: 1.1 km, Grade 3, 20–40 minutes. White sand cliffs with a red clay or gravel cap, views toward Lennards Island and Haycock Point. The photo is from the formed track. The formations are not a scramble, not a kids’ sandcastle and not the same landform as the Devonian red platforms on Light to Light.

Morning light on the red cap photographs better than midday glare. Park only in signed bays. While the night-shooting window is posted (through 6am Friday 25 September 2026), this loop is open 6am–6pm and closed after dusk when operations run. [VERIFY] live alerts the morning you drive.

Pair with Haycock Point picnic or the Pambula River track — not with Boyds Tower the same morning unless you enjoy sitting on the Princes Highway.

Walks that actually fit a northern day

Easy win: Pinnacles loop, then sit. That is a complete first visit from Pambula. Grade 3 on a short loop still means uneven ground — shoes, not thongs.

Pambula River walking track: official 1 km return, Grade 4, 20–40 minutes. Reached via Pambula Beach Road (about 4 km), not Haycock Road. Riverbank and a lookout over Severs Beach. Grade 4 on a short walk still means rough or steep bits. Severs Beach is on the August night-shooting list after 6pm. Do not enter the fenced suspected-asbestos closure north of Pambula Beach Road, west of the Baptist Church.

Haycock Point to Barmouth Beach: official 3 km one-way, Grade 3, 1.5–2.5 hours, steps. Decide a turnaround time or a second car before you leave Haycock — it is not a loop. Official alerts list this track in the night-shooting window after 6pm (through 6am Friday 25 September 2026). Barmouth Beach is unpatrolled. Do not start it at 3pm.

Beaches, river and what this section is not

Barmouth, Severs, Terrace / Lennards and the Pambula-side beaches are scenery and optional swims, not flagged patrols. Strong rips, unexpected sets. If swimming quality matters, use a patrolled beach in town and treat park water as a look.

There is no Green Cape–style vehicle campground here as a first-night product. Sleep in Pambula, Pambula Beach or Merimbula and run an early northern day. Official camping for Beowa sits in the Green Cape section.

You cannot walk to Green Cape from here in a day. Light to Light is a 32 km multi-day starting at Boyds Tower, south of Eden. This northern section is a different park day.

Access, fees and where to sleep

Official visitor info (checked 16 Aug 2026): free vehicle entry north of Eden. Pedestrians and cyclists are free park-wide. Camping is a different product. Annual passes do not apply here as a day-entry problem because there is no vehicle fee.

Haycock Road is 2WD gravel. Pambula River track via Pambula Beach Road. After extreme rain, treat unsealed roads as possibly closed and read alerts. Mowarry and North Head 4WD tracks are in the Green Cape section — not required for anything on this page.

Merimbula is the services hub and the NPWS office (47 Merimbula Drive, (02) 6495 5000, 10am–3pm weekdays and some peak weekends). Pambula and Pambula Beach are the closest beds. Fuel and last shops before the gravel.

Night shooting is underway through 6am Friday 25 September 2026 at Haycock Point picnic, Haycock–Barmouth walking track, Severs Beach, Pinnacles loop, Quondola Point and Terrace Beach / Lennards Island. Those sites are open 6am–6pm. Not every night. Finish northern walks in daylight.

Suspected asbestos: closed area north of Pambula Beach Road, west of the Baptist Church, with fencing and signage. Official applies through Monday 31 August 2026, 4.55pm. Stay out. 1080 baiting is listed 1 July–31 December 2026 park-wide. Pets are not permitted (certified assistance animals excepted).
