How long do I need?

Drive times are typical tourism ranges, not a timed field diary. Eden is on the Princes Highway — about 6–7 hours from Sydney or Melbourne is a common planning band, then you still have gravel into Green Cape or Haycock Road. There is no useful public transport into the park.

Organised by intent — not a Booking search wall. Confirm hours on the day. Do not invent pump or clinic prices. Official camping stays on NSW National Parks.

Pick a day shape (before you leave the highway)

The usual mistake is trying both sections in one day. You can always do less on the ground; there is no park road across Twofold Bay. Choose the plan that matches energy and bookings, then open the matching itinerary.

When to go

There is no single “best month” — only trade-offs between whales, heat, fire, lyrebirds and whether you can book an official camp.

• Whale season: peak southward September–early December; broader April–November often cited. Boyds Tower and Green Cape lookout.
• Summer: beaches, lagoons, heat, crowding at popular spots, bushfire risk. Park may close.
• Autumn: lyrebirds at Bittangabee; milder walking.
• Winter: best multi-day walking (cooler); banksias; fewer crowds.
• Spring: whales plus wildflowers.
• Crowds: school holidays, long weekends and whale season at Boyds Tower, Green Cape and popular beaches / camps. Many visitors from Victoria. Remote Light to Light and northern beaches stay quieter.

A. Vehicle day entry (never merge north and south)

Official visitor info (checked 20 Aug 2026): Green Cape (south of Eden) $8 per vehicle per day. Pambula-Haycock (north of Eden) Free vehicle entry. Pedestrians and cyclists are free. Pay machine at Boyds Tower carpark; cash may be needed at Green Cape Lighthouse carpark. [VERIFY] machines. SOUTH of Eden (Green Cape): $8 per vehicle per day. B. Camping fees (separate system)

Camping is a separate NPWS RezExpert booking. Park entry is not included. Book only on official NSW National Parks channels. Check-in 2pm / out 10am at vehicle camps unless the campground page says otherwise. [VERIFY] live prices on the booking page. Official booking only — never affiliated here.

• Saltwater Creek: marked unpowered sites (tent, camper trailer, beside vehicle). Official booking page (checked 16 Aug 2026): book up to 9 sites / 40 people online. Toilets, BBQs, picnic. Unpatrolled beach. Rainwater tanks exist — treat them and still bring water. Check-in 2pm / out 10am. Max stay 2 weeks. No mobile coverage at the campground (intermittent on the access road).
• Bittangabee: marked unpowered sites (tent, camper trailer, motorhome-capable). Official booking page (checked 16 Aug 2026): book up to 9 sites / 40 people online. Toilets, BBQs, picnic. Rainwater tank — treat it and still bring water. Beach, storehouse ruins, lyrebirds, swim/snorkel. Access road can be boggy after rain. No mobile coverage at the campground.
• Light to Light: 10 hardwood platforms each at Mowarry and Hegartys Bay (5.4×3.6 m, 1–2 hiker tents, bring guy ropes). From $115 for 2 nights per campsite [VERIFY]. All tank water must be treated. Carry ≥5 L. Separate Mowarry campground page (checked 16 Aug 2026): 4 gravel walk-in pads for general camping (book up to 4 sites / 16 people online), plus a school-groups-only natural-surface site. About 600 m walk from the carpark; 4WD required for the carpark. Distinct from the Light to Light platforms. No standalone Hegartys Bay campground page found on NPWS at last check — book via the official Light to Light self-guided camping page / RezExpert. [VERIFY].
• Green Cape Lightstation Keepers’ Cottages and Telegraph Station: Closed for refurbishment until at least 31 December 2026. Official alerts (checked 20 Aug 2026): cottages and Telegraph Station closed until 31 Dec 2026. Carpark, lookout and walking tracks remain open. [VERIFY] before you plan an overnight cottage stay.

C. Walk permits, fishing & platforms

• No general permit for day walks or Light to Light beyond vehicle entry (current official baseline). Platforms must be booked. Trip intention recommended. [VERIFY] future changes.
• Pets are not permitted in NSW national parks (certified assistance animals excepted). 1080 baiting is listed 1 Jul–31 Dec 2026.
• NSW recreational fishing licence is a separate statewide product — we do not sell or affiliate it. See NSW DPI fishing fee.
• Free PLB hire at the Merimbula office.

First-day plan (what to do first)

For most mixed groups: one section, one main walk. The easiest start is Boyds Tower (or The Pinnacles if you are staying in Pambula) — not Light to Light.

1. Night before: pick the section, screenshot alerts, fill water, name Plan A (Boyds or Pinnacles) and Plan B (town picnic if wind or heat).
2. Pay correctly if you drive into Green Cape — $8 / day snapshot, not camping. North is free. Annual passes do not cover a booked site.
3. Do one walk: Boyds Tower or The Pinnacles. Agree a turn-around time at the car.
4. Town buffer: Eden or Merimbula if time remains. That is a complete day.
5. Skip the combo: Boyds + Pinnacles + “we’ll start Light to Light after lunch.” Different sections, hours of driving, and platforms that need a booking — not an afternoon extra.

Getting there — two sections

Self-drive is the default. No ferry. Public transport is limited — check NSW country transport if you have no car. Air: Merimbula (Sydney / Melbourne). The park is “always open” on paper, but weather and fire danger close access. Main visitor areas are 2WD gravel. Mowarry and North Head are 4WD only. Roads are all-weather but can be slippery or close after extreme rain.

Think of two separate road systems, not one loop. North (Pambula / Merimbula → Haycock, Pinnacles, Pambula River) · South (Eden → Edrom → Boyds Tower / Green Cape). Towns are where you eat, sleep and reset.

Crowds, holidays & fire

Beowa is quieter than the Sydney cliff parks, but school holidays, long weekends and whale season still fill Boyds Tower, Green Cape and the popular camps. Many visitors come from Victoria. Fire danger and total fire bans can close access.

• Book official camps ahead for holidays. Do not count on walking up for a site.
• Screenshot alerts and booking confirmations on home Wi-Fi — reception is limited.
• Don’t picnic on booked camp sites. Use signed day-use areas.
• Total fire bans and extreme heat mean staying out — extra water does not cancel a ban.

Communications & coverage

Official visitor info is explicit: limited mobile phone reception throughout the park, and you need mobile reception to call Triple Zero (000). Download the Emergency+ app before you visit. Use the NSW National Parks app for offline maps.

• Saltwater Creek: no coverage at the campground (intermittent on the access road).
• Trip intention recommended for Light to Light and remote camps.
• Free PLB hire at Merimbula NPWS. A PLB or satellite messenger is worth considering. We do not map which phone carriers work where. Starlink is not required.

Weather, rock & safety

The hazards here are rips, slippery platforms, creek wades, heat, fire and no phone — not snow, and not crocodiles. The weather strip below is orientation only — not NSW National Parks or BOM official advice for whether you should go.

• Beaches are not patrolled. Strong rips. Swim at flagged beaches outside the park, or accept the risk and read Beachsafe.
• Rock platforms are slippery. Keep clear of cliff edges. Skip Green Cape loop in strong wind or storm surge.
• Light to Light creek crossings (Saltwater, Woodburn, Bittangabee) may require wading. Tide / swell / flood. Inland alternative Bittangabee–Green Cape in rough seas — official walk page.
• Tide charts for planning: Eden / Twofold Bay and the official Light to Light recommendation, Green Cape.
• Carry water. Treat tank water. Extra food for delays.
• No firewood gathering. Pets out. 1080 listed through 31 Dec 2026 on the current snapshot.

Packing baseline

Pack for sun, wind, rock and a creek that may need a wade. Under-packing is the usual day-trip failure after “it’s just a lookout.”
