Green Cape loop walking track

How to get there

1. Past Eden ~16 km on the Princes Highway, left Edrom Road, then Green Cape Road through forestry ~8 km to the park entrance and on to the lightstation. Official pages disagree on kilometres — follow signs.
2. Pay the $8 Green Cape vehicle day entry. Cash may be needed at this carpark. [VERIFY] machines.
3. 2WD gravel for the main road. Mowarry and North Head side tracks are 4WD only — not required for this loop.
4. After extreme rain the road can be slippery or closed. Read alerts before you leave Eden.

How to do it (step by step)

1. Walk the signed 7 km loop. Official 2–3 hours. If you move slowly on rock, budget toward 3–4 hours as some unofficial briefs do — the official figure still wins for planning.
2. Check the Green Cape tide chart before you commit to shelves. Stay off surge-washed platforms.
3. If the wind is up or a swell is hitting the cape, skip the loop and use the lookout only. That is still a complete southern stop.
4. Ground parrot and little penguin / seal sightings are possible, not promised. Keep dogs out of the park. 1080 is listed through 31 Dec 2026.
5. Do not add Light to Light Day 3 as a “cool-down” after this loop unless you are actually walking through.

What to expect

Official: 7 km loop, Grade 4, 2–3 hours. Rock platforms and heath at the southernmost lighthouse in NSW. The cottages are a historic cluster — currently closed for refurbishment — not a café.

This loop is the hard day-walk in the southern section. Light to Light is the multi-day. Don’t add both unless you are actually walking through on Day 3.

Who this walk is for

Fit walkers who want rock platforms and lighthouse country without an overnight. Not a first casual walk after a late drive from Eden. Not a family “stroll around the light.”

If the group only wants the view, use Green Cape lookout and skip the loop. That is the honest call in wind or surge.

When to skip

Skip in strong wind or storm surge. Rock platforms polish and drop. Check the Green Cape tide chart. Official Light to Light notes recommend the inland Bittangabee–Green Cape alternative in rough seas — this loop is even more exposed.

Heat on heath and rock is a real hazard in summer. Carry water. Little shade.

What to pair

Strong pair: Boyds Tower first if you still have daylight for the extra drive. Weak pair: stacking this loop after a Light to Light finish; arriving for a cottage night that is closed until at least 31 December 2026.

Whales in season from the lookout do not require the 7 km. Sit, then decide.
